CAIR-Chicago Urges People to Stand Up Against Police Torture

September 13, 2006

(CHICAGO, IL – 9/13/06) CAIR-Chicago is urging all people of conscience to protest police torture this Friday!

From 1972 to 1991, a group of police officers in Chicago’s South Side has committed brutal acts of torture against African Americans in police custody. Torture methods ranging from using cattle prods to burning victims were used. During this time, involuntary confessions were extracted for serious crimes, of which dozens of people remain imprisoned for.

To date, the Office of Professional Standards (OPS) has concluded that the abuse was “systematic”, “methodical”, and “included psychological techniques and planned torture.” The United Nations has found that the torture conducted against these individuals violated basic human rights principles. Despite such findings, no one has been charged for these crimes.

We must bring light to this situation and demand justice!

Speak out against the torture on Friday, September 15!
