A Cook County Jail correctional officer of Palestinian ancestry was awarded $200,000 in damages Friday by a federal jury. Abraham Yasin, 30, sued the Cook County sheriff’s office, saying his superiors failed to look into his complaints of nearly 100 incidents of racial harassment from December 2004 to March 2006. In testifying this week, Yasin said he was the victim of harassing phone calls at work and graffiti on his locker and a bathroom stall. He also said he overheard jail officers talk about hog-tying Muslims. He said he lost sleep and suffered headaches.
