CHICAGO (CBS) — The month-long Muslim observance of Ramadan continues, and hundreds of people broke the daily fast after sundown the fast in the offices of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. As WBBM Newsradio’s Bob Roberts reports, some attendees wolfed down pizzas, chips and sodas, while others dined on more exotic dishes from around the world.CAIR-Chicago communications director Aymen Abdel Halim says CAIR’s offices and hallways were too stuffed for some people to be.

“The only thing that we wish we could have done is provided a larger space,” he said. “Honestly, it’s very difficult to walk around.” Halim says he was impressed by how many of the 500 or so people who came to the celebration were not Muslim, or Chicagoans.

“I think the only continent that hasn’t been represented tonight is Antarctica,” he said. The lines were especially long for homemade dishes entered in a cookoff, won by CAIR law clerk Claudia Bertacchi’s cannoli.

Ramadan ends on Saturday, Aug. 18.
