(Chicago, IL, 8/12/05) – The Chicago chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), in conjunction with the Civil Liberties Coalition of Illinois (CLCI) and Representative Danny K. Davis will hold a press conference to discuss the new threat to civil liberties due to the recent passage of the Patriot Act’s sunset provisions in the U.S. House of Representatives.
WHEN: Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at 10:00
WHERE: 3333 West Arthington Street, Chicago, Illinois 60624 (District office of Representative Danny K. Davis)
WHO: The members of CLCI are the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights, the Chicago Council of Lawyers (CCL), the Cook County Bar Association, the Council on American-Islamic Relations – Chicago (CAIR-Chicago), the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), the Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO), the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA), the Muslim Bar Association (MBA), the Muslim Civil Rights Center (MCRC), and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG).
WHY: This press conference will urge the constituents and elected officials of Illinois to encourage the Congressional Conference Committee to consider modifying the Patriot Act. This is necessary in order to protect American civil liberties while still enhancing national security. The legal and advocacy organizations in Illinois are united against the infringement of civil liberties when hostility and misinformation are rampant. In times of war, constitutional protections are most precious to all Americans.
