Hoda Katebi Speaks at UIUC

Yesterday CAIR-Chicago Communications Coordinator Hoda Katebi spoke at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign on the topic of Muslim feminism as well as the challenges Muslim women in particular face. The event was hosted by United Muslims and Minority Advocates

Katebi spoke on the exclusivity of “white/mainstream feminism,” the hijab, and Orientalism, and commented on a range of issues from colonial feminism to Dolce & Gabbana’s hijab collection.

She also spoke on the deep necessity of intersectionality for organizing and activist spaces for collective progress, and encouraged more Muslims to join social justice initiatives and also work to create their own spaces to challenge the direct ways Muslim communities are harmed by state-based projects and agendas in the USA.
