Amina Sharif Emcees Northwest Suburban College Banquet

CAIR-Chicago Communications Coordinator Amina Sharif emceed a banquet hosted by the Northwest Suburban College on Friday, September 24. The banquet was held to foster more community support for, as well as to spread awareness of the services the college offers. Northwest Suburban College is a school of health sciences in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, and was founded by local Muslim doctors who hope to one day develop the institution into a medical school.

Sharif set the tone for the night by stating that many of the most respected learning institutions in this country were founded by faith-based groups, and that it is time for Muslims to contribute to American society in this way as well.

The event’s keynote speaker was Rami Nashashibi, executive director of the Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN). Nashashibi discussed the importance of education in Islam and the responsibility of all Muslims to improve the society in which they live.

Dr. Zaher Sahloul, Chairman of the CIOGC (Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago) delivered the closing remarks in which he echoed similar sentiments, stating that institution building is the key to Muslim Americans securing their rightful place in American society.
