Young Chicago Muslim Leader Symposium

The First Young Chicago Muslim Leader Symposium, sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Chicago Chapter (CAIR-Chicago) will take place this Saturday, September 17th. The purpose of this event is to bring together the leaders of Young Muslim organizations of the greater Chicagoland area to discuss issues facing our community and ways on how we can collaborate to maximize efficiency.
All leaders of young Muslim organizations are welcome. If your organization would like to participate, please contact Dina Rehab, CAIR-Chicago Outreach Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org, or 312-212-1520. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, we can only host two members from each organization; preferably one brother and one sister.
Attending organizations include: Benedictine MSA, College of Dupage MSA, DePaul's UMMA, Illinois Institute of Technology MSA, Loyola MSA, Moraine Valley's MSA, Bridgeview Muslim Youth Center, University of Chicago McSA, Universal School, and Young Muslims.

This session will discuss CAIR-Chicago’s vision and mission, its five departments, activities and staff members.

What is the current public perception of Islam & Muslims? If it is inaccurate and bigoted, then what are the factors that make it so? What is our role in ensuring an accurate and fair representation of Muslims in the media? How do we successfully challenge public expressions of bigotry? How do we make an imprint on the public discourse on Islam and Muslims in America? Learn effective ways on how to deal with the Media. Learn about the importance of online information exchange, and web blogging.

This session will discuss the need for professionalizing Muslim activism: the state of Muslim Activism, the importance of institution building, maximizing the effect of transient individual activism
11:30-12:00 Project O, DePaul Club Speaker: Yaser Tabbara
This session will discuss steps needed to politically empower American Muslims per their local issues. CAIR-Chicago’s seminal project (Project O) will be discussed in its multiple tracks: information gathering, grass root outreach and education, cultivating relationships, and community mobilizing.

1:00 – 1:45 Know Your Rights as a Student, DePaul Club Speaker: Christina Abraham (Civil Rights Coordinator, CAIR-Chicago)
This session will discuss the various types of incidents that may and have arisen at schools by either other students or members of the faculty/staff. Learn what your rights are as a student and how you can respond to incidents of religious discrimination.
1:45-2:30 Working Together, DePaul Club Speaker: Dina Rehab (Outreach Coordinator, CAIR-Chicago)
This session will discuss ways in which CAIR-Chicago can collaborate with the various Muslim Student Associations towards enhancing efficiency.
