CAIR-Chicago Speaks on Political Activism Panel
April 26, 2006

CAIR-Chicago Governmental Relations Coordinator Sadiya Ahmed was invited to speak on a political activism panel discussion sponsored by Community Builders in Arlington Heights on Wednesday, April 26, 2006. Co-panelists included former Democratic candidate for the 6th congressional district, Cristine Cegalis, legislative assistant to an Illinois General Assembly member, T.J. Lewis, and community member and activist Naim Mansour. The panelists discussed the importance of getting involved in the community in the initial stages of movements in addition to keeping a balance in the time that one contributes. While Cegalis and Lewis explained the importance of activism in national and local politics, Ahmed and Mansour spoke about the importance of action within a community’s local structure, on a grassroots level. “Actions can be anything from simply distributing flyers during Friday prayer at a local mosque to building coalitions around hot button issues in the community,” said Ahmed.
