The Elderhostel "Building Bridges to Islam" event takes place at the Des Plaines Mosque in suburban Chicago.
CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Ahmed Rehab welcomes the audience to the half-day program and encourages participants to ask any and all questions they have regarding Islam.
The Elderhostel's "Building Bridges to Islam" program is being hosted by CAIR-Chicago for the second straight year, and draws over 75 participants per class who enroll to learn about Islam and Muslims.
Rehab introduces the first course of the day, Islam 101, which introduces basic Islamic principles and correlations between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
The event panelists, Communications Coordinator Sultan Muhammad, Ahmed Rehab, and Communications Intern Sumiah Aduib, answer questions from the audience ranging from topics on women in Islam to religious sectarianism.
Dr. Muhammad Eissa, former professor of Islamic and Arabic studies at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan, gives a presentation on Islamic history and culture.
At noon, participants enjoy a traditional Egyptian meal with a large variety of options, including seared meats, salads, hummus, and arabic desserts.
Caterers from Nefertiti Restuarant and Cafe help attendees with menu options.
Tables are setup in the Des Plaines Mosque conference hall, where participants relax and discuss the day's events.
After lunch, Rehab leads the group through the mosque, during which participants get the opportunity to observe one of the five daily prayers.
Participants listen to the recitation of the Quran, which is performed during the noon time prayer.
