Chicago Area Muslims asked to urge Congress & White House to step up aid

(Chicago, IL, 10/10/05) – The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is calling on local Mosques and Islamic centers to hold prayers and collect donations tonight for those killed, injured or left homeless by the recent massive earthquake in South Asia.

CAIR-Chicago is also calling on Mosque directors to instruct their congregations to contact the white house as well as their representatives in Congress to request that the US send helicopters and K-9 search and Rescue teams to assist in the much needed operations.

“Pakistan is severely lacking in rescue helicopters and K-9 teams, if they can get those immediately, hundreds of people stand a good chance of being saved – otherwise chances are slim. Our experience from the Iran quake tells us so,” said CAIR-Chicago Ahmed Rehab, Director of Communications.

"The Muslim community in Chicago came together to help the victims of the tsunami in South Asia and of recent Gulf Coast hurricanes," said CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Yaser Tabbara. "We must now do our part to help the victims of this latest tragedy in South Asia."
