CAIR-Chicago Governmental Relations Coordinator Sadiya Ahmed and Governmental Relations Intern John Rush attended a candidates’ forum for the upcoming primary election in the 3rd congressional district on Thursday, March 9 in the southwest suburbs. Candidates such as Philip Jackson running for Bobby Rush’s seat in the 1st district, individuals running for the Chicago Water Reclamation Department, as well as judgeships were present at the event. Furthermore, candidates John Sullivan and John Kelly, both running against incumbent Dan Lipinski for U.S. House of Representatives both addressed the crowd on their positions about issues pertinent to the Muslim and Arab community such as civil rights and liberties, the war on Iraq, and immigration. Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Kelly both articulated their opposition to the war as well as the need for an autonomous Iraqi government. Mr. Sullivan conveyed to the audience his opposition to the Patriot Act, commenting on its unchecked powers to the government. The primary elections will take place on Tuesday, March 21, 2006. The winners of this election will proceed to run on their parties’ tickets for various offices.
