“We think there is a bias against the Muslim institutions,” said Kevin Vodak, the lawyer for CAIR-Chicago. He noted that the board rejected the Irshad proposal without explanation, which is highly unusual, and that last fall the county took up an amendment to prohibit any new religious institutions in residential areas. “Most of the new proposals are from Muslims,” Mr. Vodak said.

M. Cherif Bassiouni, distinguished research professor at DePaul University and CAIR-Chicago’s Honorary Chairman, will be speaking at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs about his book “The Institutionalization of Torture by the Bush Administration. Is Anyone Responsible?” Bassiouni will hold a small presentation along with a discussion afterward.

CAIR-Chicago would like to announce that Dr. Mazen Kudaimi has accepted the position of Chairman of CAIR-Chicago’s Board of Directors. Read more about Dr. Kudaimi HERE.

CAIR-Chicago also says goodbye to its former Chairman, Safaa Zarzour, who will now be serving as the Secretary General of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). He will be missed.

Mayor Daley presented Zarzour with the 2009 Arab Heritage Month Award for Outstanding Contributions to Chicago’s Arab Community and commended him for his exceptional community service.

“I am truly honored to receive this recognition on behalf of a dignified community from a city I am proud to serve,” said Zarzour.
