CAIR-Chicago and ICIRR (Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights) are partnering to encourage and mobilize residents of Illinois’ 8th congressional district to vote in this year’s general election.

Less than one week after sending a letter to Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, a Muslim rights advocate organization says it has been reassured that Chicago police will not undertake blanket surveillance of the city’s Muslim population.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy vowed at a meeting with a local Muslim leader Tuesday to confine his department’s surveillance activities to those that pursue “criminal leads,” and to avoid the type of widespread spying allegedly carried out by New York police.

On Wednesday, August 17th 2011, CAIR-Chicago staff attorney, Rabya Khan, and communications intern, Becky Fogel, attended a public hearing held by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to discuss the Secure Communities program. The event ended in civil disobedience led by local youth and the arrest of six attendees.

ICIRR is looking for immigrants and the children of immigrants who are dedicated to their communities and are interested in helping to increase the representation of immigrants in public office.

The passing of the Illinois DREAM Act not only shows that Illinois is an immigrant friendly state, but also that the political power of immigrants in this country is growing stronger. The state of Illinois holds the honor of being the first state in the nation to opt out of the “Secure Communities” program and is the first state in the nation to actually implement a version of the DREAM Act.

Later today the Illinois DREAM Act (SB2185) will go to committee for a vote. If passed it could be voted in the House floor as early as tomorrow. Tell your state representative to support the Illinois DREAM Act!

At the press conference, the speakers echoed President Obama’s assertion that Osama Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader, and in fact was a mass-murderer of Muslims. CAIR-Chicago’s Communication Coordinator, Amina Sharif, stated “Bin Laden never represented Islam and was never seen as a Muslim leader, but unfortunately many people’s understanding of Islam was distorted by the actions of Bin Laden.”
