CAIR-Chicago Attends Leadership Strategy Planning Meeting

CAIR-Chicago’s Governmental Relations Coordinator attended a leadership strategy meeting at the ICIRR office on Wednesday, December 21, 2005. The national agenda for the upcoming year was discussed with a focus on anti-immigration legislation such as HR 4437, which has already been passed in the House and expected to be discussed in the Senate early next year, and the REAL ID Act passed earlier this year. Discussions centered on tactics to prevent passage of such legislation in addition to ways to combat the limiting provisions of the REAL ID Act. The state level agenda includes ways to combat the REAL ID Act which requires anyone applying for a driver’s license or state identification cards to have a social security numbers, which are not issued to illegal immigrants. The possibility of proposing legislation in the Illinois General Assembly for the issuance of Driver’s Certificates, an alternate to driver’s licenses for the undocumented, was raised. Other state proposals include funding for Muslim social Services and the New Americans Initiative.

Present at the meeting were members from: ICIRR, Waukegan School District, CAIR-Chicago, and CIOGC, Centro Romero, and various other organizations. The next meeting is scheduled for January 14th, 2006.
