A local Islamic group is leading an effort to try to get a major cable TV company to include in its basic package a Muslim-oriented channel.

WBBM Newsradio 780's Bernie Tafoya reports the Council on American-Islamic Relations is asking Muslims to call and e-mail Comcast to ask that Bridges TV be included in Comcast's basic package.

Council Executive Director Ahmed Rehab says Muslims who want Bridges TV now have to pay extra for it, a 180 dollar a year subscription fee.

He says Muslims "can happily" pay for the channel, but that then, non-Muslims would not be getting the chance to see it so that they "can see what Muslims are about"

There are some cable TV companies that do offer the English- language Muslim channel in a basic package including Wow! cable.

Comcast has promised a response.
