Esposito, Rehab: Understanding Islam in the Modern World II - University of Chicago

UNDERSTANDING ISLAM IN THE MODERN WORLD WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1st 2006 HUTCH COMMONS UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO 7:30 PM

The University of Chicago Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students is partnering up once again with the Chicago Office of the Council On American-Islamic Relations to present the second installment of "Understanding Islam in the Modern World."

The first installment (link: http://www.cairchicago.org/events.php?file=ev_uofcislam05242006) took place at the University of Chicago last semester and proved to be an immense success with students and the community. At that time, Ahmed Rehab, CAIR-Chicago's Executive Director was joined by Dr. Aminah McCloud, professor of Islamic Studies at DePaul University, Tim McNulty, Public Editor at the Chicago Tribune, and Margaret Holt, customer service editor at the Chicago Tribune.

This time, Rehab will be joined by keynote speaker Dr. John L. Esposito, a world renowned scholar of Islam and founding director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.

The goal of the event is to provide a forum for education and discussion around complex cultural issues that have strong implications in the lives of individuals and communities on campus and beyond.

Speakers attempt to diffuse common misperceptions about Islam and Muslims and to shed light on key contemporary events surrounding Muslims and Islam in today's headlines. Emphasis is placed on audience interaction via a lively question and answer segment following speaker presentations.
