CAIR-Chicago Attends ICIRR Membership Planning Meeting

CAIR-Chicago Governmental Relations Coordinator, Sadiya Ahmed attended a membership meeting held by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) on Ma y 30, 2006 at 6:30 PM on the west side of Chicago. Discussed at the meeting was the coalition’s position on the Senate version of the immigration bill passed last week. Member organizations discussed the options and the way the issue should be framed, finally voting to accept the positive provisions of the bill and fighting to block the damaging ones before and while the Conference Committee meets to negotiate. The current bill as it stands includes a path to legalization for all but 2 to 3 million out of the 11.1 million undocumented individuals. It would also out undocumented students on the path to citizenship based on exceptional academic performance and no prior criminal records. However, the bill still maintains indefinite detentions as a way to enforce immigration laws among many troubling provisions. Some organizations present at the meeting were: Muslim Youth Center (Mosque Foundation), Arab-American Family Services, CIOGC Southwest Organizing Project, Centro Romero, Albany Park Neighborhood Council, Asian American Institute, Indo American Center, Polish American Center, and clergy people from faith based organizations.
