CONGRESSWOMAN JAN SCHAKOWSKY DISCUSSES THE PATRIOT ACT AT LOCAL TOWN HALL MEETING

April 8, 2005

(CHICAGO, IL, 7/14/05) - – The Chicago chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), in participation with the Civil Liberties Coalition of Illinois (CLCI), held a town hall meeting today with guest speaker, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, to encourage Illinois’ elected representatives to vote “NO” to the reauthorization of the expiring provisions of the Patriot Act.

The PATRIOT Act permits surveillance of individuals without notification and seizure of personal information such as medical, university, Internet, and business records. The Act lowers standards of proof for conducting these investigations and imposes a gag order on individuals from whom the federal government seeks private information.

“The purpose of the Town Hall Meeting is to provide information that will allow members of the community to take educated positions on the sunset provisions of the PATRIOT Act and discuss them with their elected representatives,” Fadi Farhan, CAIR-Chicago’s Director of Governmental Relations said. “The sunset provisions of the Patriot Act have and will continue to infringe on the civil liberties of all Americans. Security should not be sought at the expense of liberty and the very cornerstones of our democracy“, Ahmed Rehab, CAIR-Chicago Director of Communications said.
