NEW STUDY REVEALS MUSLIM-AMERICAN ATTITUDES

(CHICAGO, IL, 5/22/07) -The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) reacted today to the "first-ever" nation-wide survey of Muslim-Americans.

"The overwhelming finding is that nearly two-thirds of Muslim-Americans do not see a conflict between being devout Muslims and being integrated citizens of this country," said Sultan Muhammad, CAIR-Chicago Communications Coordinator.

The survey conducted by the PEW Research Center reveals that Muslims in the United States reject extremism and are "decidedly American in outlook, values, and attitudes."

"The study confirms that there is no shortage of moderate American Muslims, contrary to the claims made by Islamophobic alarmists," Muhammad said.

Most Media headlines have focused on the survey's finding that a very small percentage of those surveyed believe suicide attacks can be justified in certain cases; 80% believe that they can never be justified under any circumstance.

CAIR-Chicagos spokespersons are available for interviews on the local Muslim reaction.
