Welcome Response

Response to Chicago Tribune's "Missteps in the War or Terror" It is interesting that the editorial board chose to describe the failure of Congress to reauthorize the USA Patriot Act a “regrettable effect” of the disclosure that President Bush authorized many times spying on American citizens (“Missteps in the war on terror,” Dec. 19).

The death of this act may be the only good thing that will come out of this blatant violation of American civil liberties. Four years ago only one senator had the courage to stand up for the American values he was elected to represent. It took major desecration of America liberties to convince 46 other senators to join him last week in rejecting the renewal of expiring provisions.

The Chicago Tribune should instead label this as a “welcome response.”
