CAIR-Chicago Represents a Student Before the Board of Education

CAIR-Chicago Staff Attorney, Heena Musabji and Civil Rights Intern, Azhar Kothawala, met with a local school board to discuss the fairness of the punishment of a student. The student experienced two years of physical and verbal harassment, with references to Islam and terrorism, from another student. Complaints were made to school authorities, but no action was taken. An altercation took place between the two students, and unequal punishments resulted from administrative proceedings and a board decision. The school board has agreed to allow CAIR-Chicago to look into this matter in the presence of their legal counsel. The school board also showed interest in discussing an opportunity for CAIR-Chicago to conduct sensitivity training for the student body. copyright © 2006, cairchicago.org
