CAIR-Chicago Represents Muslim Man in Interview with the Illinois Department of Human Rights

CAIR-Chicago Civil Rights Coordinator Christina Abraham represented a Muslim man in an interview with the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR). The man filed a charge of discrimination with the IDHR for denial of public accommodation after he and a relative were accused of stealing at a local department store. The man says he and his relative were in the store speaking with each other in Arabic. After making a purchase and leaving the store, they were pulled over by a police officer who claimed that the department store security complained that he had stolen from the store. After the man showed the officer that he had purchased everything he had bought, the officer then accused the man of using a stolen credit card.

The police officer let him go only after the man showed the officer the credit card he used to make the purchase and his identification.

IDHR is investigating the matter. CAIR-Chicago will continue to represent the man in the matter against the department store.
