Thank Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam for His Remarks About Ramadan

ACTION REQUESTED: September 17, 2007

CAIR-Chicago is urging the Illinois American Muslim community to thank Congressman Peter Roskam (R-6) for his recent efforts to publicly recognize the holy month of Ramadan in the House of Representatives.

On September 12, 2007, Congressman Roskam made a public statement in the House regarding the month of Ramadan:

“Madam Speaker, I rise today to recognize the commencement of Ramadan , the Muslim holy month of introspection, fasting and spiritual renewal.

Throughout the entire ninth month of the Islamic calendar year, Muslims demonstrate their devotion to God by fasting from sunrise until sunset. The holy month of Ramadan is also an important time for Muslim families and communities as they join together in expression of their devotion.

Many Muslims take the month of September to seek physical and spiritual renewal. In fact, more than 25,000 Muslims in my Congressional District observe this celebration to mark their steadfast commitments to faith, peace, family and heritage.

Madam Speaker and distinguished colleagues, please join me in honoring the celebration of the month of Ramadan and wishing Muslims a peaceful and blessed holiday. “

Congressman Roskam, a former Senator in the Illinois State Legislature, also offered a resolution before the Illinois Senate recognizing the month of Ramadan officially in Illinois in 2005.
