CAIR-Chicago Represents Muslim Man in Public Accommodation Complaint Against Department Store

CAIR-Chicago Civil Rights Coordinator Christina Abraham represented a Muslim man at a fact finding conference in a charge of discrimination filed against a local department store. The charge was filed with the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR). The man and a relative were shopping in the department store when they were followed by store security, and later pulled over by local police and accused of shoplifting. After showing the police that they had made valid purchases and did not steal from the store, the police released the men and informed them that they were responding to a call from the store’s security. Since a resolution could not be reached at the fact finding conference, the IDHR will investigate the claim.
