CAIR-Chicago Staff Attorney Resolves Employment Discrimination Case

Feature 234In a successful bid on behalf of a Muslim man, CAIR-Chicago Staff Attorney Tricia Kemling secured a settlement through the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). After years of unfair treatment by his supervisor, which included being passed over for promotions and derogatory treatment, the man pursued legal action with CAIR-Chicago's help. The EEOC mediation session resulted in a settlement whereby he was able to stay at his position and receive remuneration for damage that was suffered as a result of the discrimination.

"It was nice to see the employer and employee come to an agreement to remedy the discrimination," said Ms. Kemling. "This is a step in the right direction."

The EEOC was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. Since its inception, it has been pursuing the goal of ending discrimination in the workplace, whether it is racial, ethnic, religious, or gender-based.

CAIR is the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and social advocacy organization, with 35 branches and chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Its' mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
