Vigils Held Across Chicago for Slain Muslim Students
The tragic murder of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Tuesday night has deeply saddened communities of all faiths across the nation. After mainstream media failed to give proper attention to the tragic event, social media campaigns and national advocacy efforts brought the incident into the mainstream spotlight.
Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, were model examples of youth leaders active in their communities and avid volunteers. See BuzzFeed’s profile of the victims to learn more about these amazing individuals.
Yesterday candlelight vigils expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and greater Muslim American community were held across Chicagoland and around the world. Staff from CAIR-Chicago contacted media and attended an interfaith vigil organized by a student group at Loyola.
Independently organized vigils were held at both the Lakeshore and Water Tower campuses of Loyola University, as well as DePaul University, Columbia College Chicago, and Northwestern University, in Evanston.
