CAIR-Chicago Saddened by Passing of Cardinal George

CAIR-Chicago is saddened by the death of Cardinal Francis George, who passed away this morning after a long struggle with cancer. He was 78. "Cardinal George was a strong interfaith leader, with whom the local Muslim community and CAIR-Chicago was blessed to build a relationship with," said Sufyan Sohel, Deputy Director of CAIR-Chicago.

Cardinal George was a native of Chicago and a prominent voice in the American Catholic church. In a city rich with many religious traditions CAIR-Chicago recognized Cardinal George's ability to build bridges and find common ground between communities. In interfaith work, the Catholic church in Chicago has always been a dear friend and driven partner in confronting bigotry, strengthening cultural understandings, and nurturing brotherhood between Abrahamic traditions.

CAIR-Chicago sends its deepest condolences to all of those closest to Cardinal George and sends thoughts and prayers to the Catholic Community for their tremendous loss.
