CAIR-Chicago Issues Statement Disapproving of Supreme Court Decision Regarding Muslim Ban

(CHICAGO, IL, 6/26/2018) – The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) today called a press conference to condemn the recent Supreme Court decision that upholds the Muslim Ban. The decision was released earlier this morning.

The Muslim Ban was instituted by President Donald Trump late last year. It moved to ban immigrants from 9 Muslim countries from entering the US on the basis of homeland security.

“This is a miscarriage of justice,” CAIR-Chicago Deputy Director and counsel Sufyan Sohel said, “The Supreme Court had an opportunity to remind this country that all of us, regardless of where we were born, what we look like, or how we pray, are welcome, and they failed. This ban was inspired by – and remains – contrary to the values of freedom and equality that are central to who we aspire to be as a nation.”

"This decision joins the ranks of Korematsu and Dred Scott and will be remembered as a moral failing for our country. Our fight continues. While the Supreme Court may have an interpretation of what is legal in this specific and narrow instance, it cannot tell us what is right. We will continue to sue on behalf of our clients and the fight will additionally move to the halls of Congress, where we call upon legislators to do their jobs and tell this president there can be no Muslim Ban ever," CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Ahmed Rehab said.
