He was only saying what a lot of people think. And Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) was asserting only common sense in saying young Arab men from terrorist-producing countries should face "a certain amount of intense scrutiny" when applying to enter America. Kirk was quick to acknowledge that the view he expressed over the weekend is "politically uncomfortable." Predictably, the Chicago Council on American-Islamic Relations demanded an apology. But Kirk has nothing to apologize for. No, not all young Arab men are terrorists. But the terrorists responsible for the 9/11, London subway, Madrid train, Bali resort and other major attacks were young Muslim men. Any U.S. security measures ignoring that fact only invite trouble. Until we have a blue-haired old lady detonating a suicide bomb somewhere, no one should find it comforting to see grandmothers subjected to random searches at airport security gates. Kirk is no back-bench warmer, but rather an energetic legislator knowledgeable about foreign affairs and a Naval Reserve intelligence officer. We need leaders who don't flinch from telling the truth out of fear of being damned as politically incorrect. "I just know where the [terrorism] threat is from...and I think it's OK to recognize that," Kirks aid. And we think it's OK for Kirk to voice the unvarnished truth.
