U.S. Customs and Border Protection Meets with CAIR-Chicago

CAIR-Chicago Incoming Executive Director Ahmed Rehab and Civil Rights Coordinator Christina Abraham met with U.S. Customs and Border Protections (CBP) Director of Field Operations Robert Gomez and Assistant Director of the Chicago Field Office Brian Humphrey. The parties discussed incidents involving CBP officers that have occurred to Muslims traveling both by air and by land. CBP invited CAIR-Chicago to conduct an on-site visit at O’Hare Airport to observe CBP officers’ interactions with Muslims who are traveling. CAIR-Chicago will also conduct sensitivity training sessions to administer to CBP management staff and will work on putting together information for a pamphlet that will inform CBP officers about the religious practices of Muslims and how to accommodate them. CAIR-Chicago and CBP will also begin talks to create a potential Advisory Committee that would advise CBP on matters pertaining to the Muslim community. Copyright 2006 cairchicago.org
