Muslim Girl Thrown Out of Library - Appeal Filed

CAIR-Chicago PILI Fellow Elisa Jillson filed an appeal with Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) regarding a Muslim girl who was discriminated against at a public library. The girl was wearing a hoodie and bandanna in lieu of her headscarf (hijab) one evening while at the public library with her younger brother. A library employee told the girl to remove the hoodie. When the girl explained that she was wearing the hoodie for religious purposes, the employee responded by telling her that he did not care what the reason was, and that if she did not remove it she would have to leave.

CAIR-Chicago represented the woman as she filed a charge of discrimination with the IDHR, and will continue to represent her throughout the appeals process.
