Sufyan Sohel speaks in support of Anti-Islamophobia Resolution
On Monday, December 5, CAIR-Chicago Deputy Director Sufyan Sohel spoke at a press conference in support of a resolution sponsored by the City Council Progressive Reform Caucus condemning Islamophobia and anti-Muslim violence.
Sohel, alongside other Chicago-land Muslim leaders, condemned the post-election hate incidents and speech faced by the American Muslim community and later testified in front of the City Council’s Human Relations Committee supporting the passage of the resolution.
Sufyan testified “Our community is in fear, our civil rights violated. We have individuals who are afraid to wear their hijabs and grow beards. We have children attacked at schools, American citizens harassed by law enforcement and on airplanes. I support this resolution and hope that this is the first of many acts that the City of Chicago takes on ensuring the safety of all of its communities. We look forward to working alongside the City and our community partners in combating hate against all groups and protecting the civil rights of all Chicagoans.”
The Resolution passed unanimously in the Committee and will be brought forth at the City Council Meeting on December 14th.
