CAIR-Chicago Participates in ABC7 Chicago’s Mayoral Town Hall

Tuesday April 28th, CAIR-Chicago participated in a live town hall meeting with Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson hosted by ABC7 Chicago. Our community has faced a burdensome rise in hate crimes, alongside many others. Our Communications Coordinator, Jordan Esparza-Kelley, stepped up to ask the Mayor when we can expect the city to setup a broad coalition of civil rights workers to help mitigate the hate being perpetrated against Chicago's Black, Latino, and Religious communities.

Jordan’s Question: we here at CAIR-Chicago are wondering when can we expect a broad coalition of civil rights workers to be assembled to mitigate hate crimes across Chicago including those toward the Black, Latino and religious communities?

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Answer: You know unfortunately hate crime that has often been provocated by political ideology quite frankly has increased and it's something that I am very much concerned about and in tune with. We are working with our department of Human Relations to you know again you know create stronger guidelines around how we can show up better for our city and particularly groups that have been targeted because of their race, their ethnicity, because of their religion, because of their gender, right. And so we obviously commissioned a study and a report as well as a hearing to have that conversation. Those recommendations, we are considering those recommendations in an ongoing fashion. And the expectation is that those renderings and those those guidelines that we know we need to establish to better strengthen our communities to better protect our communities that we take that information to be able to come up with best practices to ensure that no one should be discriminated against or harmed because of their race, ethnicity, or certainly not because of their religion.
