Communications Coordinator to Speak on 'African Muslims in Antebellum America' at Benedictine University

What: Islam Awareness Week

Topic: Servants of God: African Muslims in Antebellum America- A large percentage of the slave population brought from Africa was Muslim, but barely anybody knows this significant fact. African Muslims made an extraordinary but understudied impact on America through the power of their strong identities and faith. Due to their perseverance in remaining steadfast in their faith and retaining proud, positive attitudes about Africa and Islam throughout the Antebellum period, these Africans caused much trepidation in their American slave owners. As many were experienced leaders in political, religious, commercial, military or agricultural matters in Africa, they became leaders within the American slave system. This session will narrate their untold story.
