Sufyan Sohel speaks at Awaken Chicago Conference
CAIR-Chicago's own Deputy Director, Sufyan Sohel, spoke to about 50 people this past weekend about Islamic history and common misconceptions about the religion at the Awaken Chicago Conference.
The three-day event featured speakers and breakout sessions -- everyone participating in conversations that promoted inner peace and social action.
Sohel "shared the history of religious extremism and the rise of current Islamic terrorist groups. We then spent about 30 minutes discussing misconceptions about Islamic extremism and its affect on the rest of the global Muslim community in terms of Islamaphobia and discrimination faced by American Muslims."
Also touching on the refugee crisis, Sohel stimulated conversations about the hostilities against refugees and how Americans should "continue to be a land for those seeking refuge and freedom."
