The Daily Chronicle reports on the DeKalb Walmart incident and CAIR Chicago's call on law enforcement to investigate the assault as a hate crime.

"Police are investigating a report that a man shouted at a Muslim woman and pulled off her veil Monday at Walmart, 2300 Sycamore Road, according to a news release from a civil rights group.

The Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling for law enforcement to treat the incident as a hate crime.

The release said the woman, who is an American citizen, tried taking a picture of the man after he yelled at her about 12:30 p.m. Monday, telling her Americans don’t want her here, and that he walked toward her, screaming, and pulled her clothing hard enough that it hurt her neck and back.

The CAIR release said recent hate crime statistics from the FBI show nearly a quarter of victims of anti-religious hate crimes in 2016 were Muslim, and that the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes were up 20 percent last year."
