The Illinois State Police has revoked the appointment of a prominent cleric to become the department's first Muslim chaplain. Ahmed Rehab, CAIR's executive director in Chicago, called it discrimination against Muslims, especially since Imam Kifah Mustapha hasn't been formally accused of wrongdoing.

Last December Illinois State Police made history by naming Mustapha the department's first and only Muslim chaplain. Sheikh Mustapha was one of seven ministers who went through chaplain orientation training in Springfield.

The exhibit addressed racial profiling and the rise of violence and hate directed at Muslims in the post-9/11 era, according to a release from Chicago's chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The installation features a wall filled with lines from actual hate crimes against people perceived as Muslim or Arab.

The artist is a Muslim graduate student at the School of the Art Institute. Anida Yoeu Ali said she was shocked to find someone painted caricatures and the words "kill all Arabs" on her work at 33 S. State St. "I feel that this act of violence is a way to try to silence me, to silence my work, to silence the people of whom I'm speaking for," Ali said.

The Council on American Islamic Relations calls the vandalism a hate crime.

The art work by graduate student, Anida Yoeu Ali, is just one part of a series of work at the school entitled, "1700% Project." That series displays responses to hate crimes in the form of artistic expression.

"The bench should be representative of American society, and if you look at American society there are people of different religions, races, and genders," says Christina Abraham, CAIR-Chicago Civil Rights Director.

But for many of the estimated four million Arab-Americans – that doesn't seem to be telling the whole story.Reema Ahmad is with the Council on American Islamic Relations. She says the most important thing, is civic duty. Especially since some Arab pockets of the city had low participation for the last census.

"Critics argue when you think about it, for the most part, all of the people who try to blow airliners out of the sky look alike," Doocy said. "False," replied Ahmed Rehab. "False information. Not true. I mean, we don't have to go far. The last guy that tried to take down a plane was a young African. And in the past, prior to that incident, we were looking for Middle eastern-looking men. Next time it could be an Asian guy. So no, they don't always look alike."

"In the interest of national security I don't mind [being searched]. American Muslims are also concerned about remaining safe. But we should not be singled out because of our religious beliefs," said Amina Sharif, CAIR-Chicago's Communications Coordinator.

"The real question is not whether we should use the term "war" or not, but who is this war against. And that is what Obama and others have been struggling to articulate.... In the past we've heard that we are at war with "Radical Islam", but "Radical Islam" is a concept, and you cannot go to war with a concept. You can go to war against a people or an entity and that is where Al-Qaeda comes in. President Obama was correct in stating that we are at war with Al Qaeda," said Ahmed Rehab.

"If you add up hate mail, hateful phone calls and e-mails, racial slurs being yelled at people and verbal or physical altercations, it's dozens of incidents," said Amina Sharif. "Hate is a self-addressed envelope and so the person who bears this hate is the victim of his own hatred before I am. And I can only pray for that person to find peace and to rid himself of that hatred," said Ahmed Rehab.

CAIR-Chicago Civil Rights Director Christina Abraham, who attended the hearing with Amal Abusumayyah, said afterward, "We are hopeful that this sent a message to the public that sort of behavior will not be tolerated by a fair and just society."
