MEDIA ADVISORY: CAIR-Chicago to Join American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Allies at Press Conference Following City Vote on Resolution in Support of Salah Sarsour

(Chicago, IL 5/6/2026)—The American Muslims for Palestine (AMP)-Chicago, in collaboration with local community organizations, will hold a press conference outside of City Hall following the vote on City Council Resolution R2026-0024891, calling on U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to immediately release Salah Sarsour and to ensure safeguarding of immigrant rights and prevention of further abuses of power in immigration enforcement. The resolution was introduced by Alderpeople Byron Sigcho-Lopez, Anthony Quezada, and Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez.

Community leader Salah Sarsour, the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, a board member of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), chairman of AMP’s Annual Palestine Convention, and a longtime community leader in Chicago and Milwaukee. Sarsour was detained by ICE and transferred out of state two weeks ago. He has lived in the United States for over 30 years and has no criminal record here, yet remains in ICE detention without justification. His son, Kareem Sarsour, will be testifying at the hearing. 

 

The resolution demands the immediate release of Salah Sarsour from detention to rejoin his wife, 6 kids, grandchildren, and community. The resolution further states that the DHS and ICE:

 

  • “ Ensure that his case is handled with full transparency and due process;

  • Respect and protect the constitutional and civil rights of all individuals, including lawful permanent residents;

  • Refrain from actions that may be perceived as targeting individuals based on their identity, background, or protected speech.”
